Penticton council moves student housing project forward

The City of Penticton moved a zoning bylaw amendment forward that could see 89 dorm-style housing units built on the Okanagan College campus.

City councillors gave three readings to the site-specific amendment, which would allow for student housing in the P1 – Public Assembly zone.

Although student housing is not allowed in the current P1 zone, city staff said adding student housing is consistent with the OCP land use designation.

According to the city staff report, the province’s Homes for People Action Plan, which included more than $2 billion for student beds across BC, awarded some funds to construct the project.

That will include 1010 student beds in 89 units.

The city says there will be 79 bachelor units, four accessible units, three two-bedrooms and three four-bedrooms.

There will one parking stall per bed.

Next steps will see a development permit reviewed.
