Is there another word in the English language as overused as "cute?"
Probably not. But every now and then, it's the perfect adjective.
And so it was Saturday morning on the Lakeshore Drive promenade for the first-ever Penticton "Hallow-wienie Parade."
Cute? What else would you call a few dozen dachshunds dressed in costumes and being walked and brazenly flaunted by their owners, many of them in costume too?
The event, where humans and pets assembled at LocoLanding then strolled the promenade to Winnipeg Street, where they turned right and headed to the finish line at, naturally, Yellow Dog Brewery, was the idea of an organization called the Penticton Dachshund Lovers.
"Usually they have a Hallow-wienie in Kelowna every year," said event organizer Connie Sahlmark, looking around at the crowd (of people), numbering close to 100.
"And I thought we have enough here that we should do it here. I wasn't sure how many we'd get, but this is already bigger than I thought."
Nearby was Emily Ramey and her dog Tank, who was sitting patiently in a wagon made up to look like a sushi bento box.
"He's 16 and can’t make the whole walk anymore so he's in the wagon," she laughed.
"But yeah, I love this group. The people at LocoLanding have a wiener dog and they open this up every Saturday or Sunday and we all come out and hang out with the wiener dogs. The dogs just love it."
Jen Kovacs brought along her dog (dressed like a hot dog) and her daughter (dressed like a cheeseburger).
"It's our first time at the wiener dog thing," she said. "And it's great. I've never seen so many of these in my life."
