Mike Larsson, a guy who's served as chief of the Pitt Meadows Fire Department since 2018 and has 20 years firefighting experience in all, is coming to the Okanagan. And on September 11 of this year, he'll begin his tenure as chief of the Penticton Fire Department.
Larsson takes the place of Larry Watkinson, who on June 1st resigned from the PFD to become deputy fire chief in Kelowna.
Watkinson made a lot of friends in his time here. The self-professed "fire nerd," intensely interested in the science of fire and firefighting, co-founded a wildfire training school that booted up every spring in Penticton, was outspoken on issues like outdoor burning, and established the awesome firefighters-versus-kids water fight that unfolds every summer.
If the incoming chief can match the outgoing, Penticton's in great shape going forward.
"After a thorough review of many outstanding candidates, we’re pleased that Chief Larsson has agreed to lead the Penticton Fire Department into the future," said City manager Donny van Dyk today.
"His experience in leading a growing department, developing resources and working with partners are the qualities we were looking for in a new chief. With an exceptional team already in place, we look forward to Chief Larsson joining and continuing the tradition of incredible service provided by the PFD.”
Larsson began his firefighting career in Pitt Meadows as a volunteer in 2003. He moved to full-time in 2010 and was promoted to chief in 2018. As chief, he saw the expansion of the department that allows for 24/7 response coverage and oversaw the development and construction of a new fire hall.
"The Penticton Fire Department has a well-deserved reputation as a forward-thinking organization that is always looking to improve and provide the best service possible to residents," said Larsson. "As the community continues to grow, I’m excited to be part of a team that will strive for excellence and build upon the foundation that exists."
