Hwy 97 closure is costing the economy, Penticton Chamber of Commerce says

Business have suffered because of the Hwy 97 closure, the Penticton and Wine Country Chamber of Commerce has said.

There have been increased delivery costs, late arrivals, order cancellations and plenty of angry customers, the Chamber explained.

One company even had to find accommodation for 27 employees because they were unable to get to Penticton for work.

Another had to shut up shop on a busy Saturday because of a lack of staff.

The response from members of the Chamber when asked if the closure had affected them was a “resounding yes”, the said.

“It’s important that we communicate with our membership on issues that they could be struggling with,” said Cary Schneiderat, president of the Chamber.

“We need to understand their needs and concerns, and to ensure we stand together and support local business.”

Earlier on Friday, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said there has been no new slide activity on the 97 over the last two days.

Geotechnical assessments are currently ongoing.
