People between the ages of 13 and 24 will be able to ride the bus for free in Penticton this year.
In 2024, Penticton became the first city in British Columbia to offer free transit for those 24 and under.
After the program saw a high uptake in its first few months, it now enters its first full year of operation.
Anyone who is eligible for a free bus pass can register for one at one of the following five locations:
“Registrants will be required to provide proof of ID to be recorded by bus pass distributors to ensure there is no duplication of pass recipients, reducing the risk of fare evasion,” a City statement explained.
“Identification that can be accepted includes: driver's license, passport, birth certificate, student ID Cards or school enrolment/registration documents.”
The funding for this ongoing pilot project is coming from a three-year grant provided by the federal government’s Building Safer Communities Fund.
