The Summerland Action Fest runs all weekend and tonight features a concert that stars Canadian rock and roll legends Harlequin ("Innocence," "I Did It for Love," "Superstitious Feeling," "Sweet Things in Life") and Nick Gilder and Sweeney Todd ("Roxy Roller," "Hot Child in the City").
NowMedia took in the Action Fest parade and some of the early morning happenings today, and then chatted with long-time event chairman (29 years!) Pat Bell, who was all about tonight's show.
"The coolest thing about this year is the new concert. We used to have a dance, now it's a concert with some really big names on the Canadian rock scene. We're hoping to see everybody out there," Bell said.
And, Bell schooled us about how the event became what it is today.
"It was initially all about action. Getting people out, and getting them moving. And it's slowly morphed into what you see here today - free entertainment in the park, a huge kids' zone, a weekend of activities, and a total attendance of 15,000 or more."
Beyond tonight's show, the event is packed with stuff to see, do and participate in, including an 80-team slo-pitch tournament that stretches all weekend long, an ongoing music festival in Summerland City Park, pancake breakfasts, a beverage garden, and of course the Giants Head Run, which begins tonight at 6 p.m.
