There’s good news when it comes to the SS Sicamous, one of Penticton’s most iconic landmarks.
The society responsible for overseeing the heritage and long-term care of the City of Penticton’s SS Sicamous has been fulfilled, ahead of schedule, with repayment on a loan supporting a collaborative improvement project, said the City in a news release Thursday.
Through an agreement approved by Penticton Council in spring of 2017, the SS Sicamous Museum and Heritage Park Society was given $50,000.
The Society agreed 75% of that total would be repaid. The money was used for the purpose of building a pier in front of the SS Sicamous to improve access for tourists boarding the ship.
The agreement was signed in March 2017, which enabled the project to be commence, while the Society kicked off a parallel fundraising initiative.
“The SS Sicamous is a historic and iconic landmark in Penticton. Council was happy to help with the project,” said Penticton Mayor Andrew Jakubeit. “Repaying the loan early exemplifies how the society has turned things around to make the operation of this tourist destination sustainable.
“The Society works diligently to improve the visitor experience and it wouldn’t be possible without its dedication and countless volunteer hours. We are very grateful for all that they do for Penticton and our little heritage marine park.”
SS Sicamous Society president Jim Cooper said the deal was a good one for both parties and he’s glad the Society was able to repay the agreed portion of the loan sooner than later.
“The Society appreciates the support and trust that City officials and staff have shown the group in recent years and we look forward to continued co-operation in the ongoing ship restoration and park improvement projects,” said Cooper.
