October may have been the end of the era, but today was the end of that era's physical manifestation. It was the day Penticton's Greyhound Bus terminal came tumbling down.
The first domino fell last July, when Greyhound announced it was pulling out of western Canada. At the end of October, the last bus left the station. And in February, Penticton City Council opted to, in Joni Mitchell's words, put up a parking lot.
And today, a bit later than originally envisioned and at approximately the same time Penticton's Downtown Community Market staged its 2019 debut a block away, the excavators moved in.
There were delays. One of those delays occurred mid-afternoon, when Telus was called to deal with a cable still attached to the structure's roof.
But by 5 p.m., there was little left at the southwest corner of Ellis and Nanaimo but rubble.
Up next - after debris removal, of course - the installation of the parking lot, which the City says will include 55 parking spaces, two electrical vehicle charging stations, bike racks, and bike lockers.
