Interior Health issued a drug alert on Monday for a substance being sold as “down, dope, fentanyl.”
According to the alert, the substance looks like grey crystals and contains high concentrations of fentanyl (25-35%) and bromazolam (benzodiazepine).
Interior Health says the substance carries a high risk of both fatal and non-fatal overdoses which may not respond to naloxone.
Other risks include amnesia, sleepiness and “nodding out” for a long time.
The alert will be in place until Monday, April 3.
Interior Health reminds people who use drugs that smoking is not safer than injecting.
People are reminded to have their drugs checked, carry naloxone, never use alone and try visiting an overdose prevention site.
