The city says initial work is beginning at the Community Centre for 80 new childcare spaces.
The new Power Street Child Care project will include 12 spaces for children under 3 years old, 44 spaces for children 3 years old to kindergarten age and 24 spaces for school aged children.
The city and YMCA of Southern Interior BC are partnering on the project, which is replacing the former Bugaboo University.
It is being supported with a $3.9 million grant from the province, a news release from the city says.
The city first began exploring the chance to revamp the space in May 2022 and the former Bugaboo University closed its doors in December 2023.
Excavators are now on site and the playground behind the community centre is now closed to allow construction to begin, notes the city.
The new facility is expected to open in late 2025.
