The City of Penticton has formally announced the resignation of Helena Konanz.
Konanz was elected as an MP for the Similkameen-South Okanagan–West Kootenay riding.
Mayor Julius Bloomfield said council was proud to see a member take on an important role at the federal level.
"Helena has been a dedicated member of Council and a strong advocate for our community during her ten years of service,” Bloomfield said in a news release.
“We look forward to working with Helena in her new role as MP and wish her every success as she continues to advocate for the region."
As a result of Konanz’s absence, the city will be holding its second by-election of the year.
A chief election officer will be appointed in the coming weeks and voting day will be set for a Saturday or later than 80 days after the appointment, the city explained in a news release.
The by-election is anticipated to take place in late summer.
According to the news release, the cost associated with the by-election will be funded through the city’s general surplus.
“We are beginning the preparatory work to hold a by-election,” said Angie Collison, corporate officer.
“This includes setting the General Voting Day, advance polls, and mail ballot options. Our team is committed to ensuring a smooth and efficient election process for the residents of Penticton."
The city says that despite James Miller on a mandatory leave of absence, council still has enough councillors to fulfill its duties.
Penticton’s newest councillor, Jason Reynen, was sworn in on April 16.
Reynen filled the seat of Amelia Boultbee after she was elected as the MLA for Penticton-Summerland.
