Beach lovers rejoice as City of Penticton will remove sandbags and baskets next week

Penticton residents - and visitors - will soon have their beach back at Okanagan Lake.

The City of Penticton issued a news release Friday stating plans are underway to begin the process of removing sandbags and gabion baskets along the City’s Okanagan Lake waterfront, commencing next week.

A variety of flood prevention works were installed during the month of May to reduce the threat of high water and/or soil erosion.

At this time, residents and visitors to Penticton are advised that Okanagan Lake beach will remain closed as heavy equipment and workers require unimpeded access to the waterfront to have it cleared and cleaned in an expedited time frame.

As an alternative beach destination, users are reminded that Skaha Lake Park remains open.

“The removal of all works and debris will take a few weeks, however, as soon as sections of the beach become clear, those areas will be reopened for public use”, said City engineer, Ian Chapman. “We thank beach users for their patience”.
