28th annual Home and Reno Show this weekend at PTCC

There's only one place in town this weekend where you get to vote for the region's ugliest deck. Or its ugliest blinds.

And then, on Sunday anyway, get to chow down on a pancake breakfast.

It's the 28th annual Penticton Home and Reno Show, this Saturday and Sunday at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre.

That’s right. The 28th annual, which makes it one of the longest-running events in the region.

Five bucks admission gets you in the door either day to see the premier home/renovation show in the South Okanagan, where, says Sarah Taylor, spokesperson and executive officer of organizing body Canadian Home Builders' Association South Okanagan, a sold-right-out roster of 100-plus knowledgeable vendors await.

"We'll have experts in flooring, windows, landscaping, hardscaping, pools, hot tubs, HVAC, window coverings, electrical, and more," she said. "There'll be designers, painters, furniture people, pergola people, barbecue people. We have everything."

That $5 admission also gives you a chance to vote for the ugliest deck and ugliest blinds. And the eventual winners, who submitted their entries before showtime, get to reap some rather cool rewards.

The best/worst deck winner gets $5,000 in lumber and deck-building products, making it a huge score for the DIYer. The ugly blinds winner gets $4,000 in blinds products.

Not bad.

Your entry fee also gets you a chance to win a $2,000 Napoleon BBQ courtesy of Fortis and $1,500 in blinds products from Skyview Closets and Blinds.

"And many of the vendors will have their own raffles and contests," said Taylor. "But most importantly, if you're doing a renovation, we’re the one place you can come where everything is under one roof."

As for that pancake breakfast, it happens Sunday only, between the hours of 9:30 and 11:30 am. It'll run you another $5, and all proceeds will benefit the oh-so-worthy South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS).

Event hours are 9 am to 5 pm Saturday and 10 am to 4 pm Sunday. Taylor suggests arriving early. Last year nearly 6,000 visitors took in the show.
