UPDATE: Hwy 33 fully open, power still out for 1K people in the South Okanagan

(UPDATE: Set. 26 @ 9:25 am) – Highway 33 reopened near Westbridge shortly before 9 pm.

DriveBC said the highway was fully open at 8:41 pm Wednesday night after trees and power lines were knocked down due to a rain storm swept through the area south of Beaverdell.

Power remains out for about 605 FortisBC customers in the area between Carmi and Westbridge, however.

There is also a large power outage affecting 488 people west of Rock Creek and in the Bridesville area.

According to FortisBC, power is not expected to be restored until 8 pm on Thursday.

(Original story: Sept. 25 @ 4:15 pm) – The thunderstorm that swept through the Okanagan Wednesday afternoon has left over 3,600 people without power Wednesday afternoon.

That includes over 2,500 FortisBC customers in Osoyoos and another 605 in the Camri area.

FortisBC crews are responding to several of those outages, however, it is unknown when power will be restored.

Highway 33 is also closed north of Westbridge, which is between Beaverdell and Rock Creek, due to downed trees and power lines.

DriveBC says crews are on scene dealing with clean up.

People who might be travelling Highway 33 Wednesday night should consider a different route as DriveBC says the estimated time of reopening is 9 pm.

People in the area are asked to keep an eye out for traffic control personnel.
