There is still work to be done at the site of the August 2023 landslide near Summerland, which resulted in a multi-day closure of Hwy 97 and several brief closures since then.
The good news, however, is that temporary stabilization work on the slope above the highway is “nearly complete,” according to BC’s Ministry of Transportation.
As a result, the site will shut down for the winter months and Hwy 97 will stay open with two lanes of traffic through the area.
“The ministry will continue to monitor the site to ensure safety,” a release from the Province explained.
The bad news is that the completion of the temporary repair efforts means that the permanent stabilization work is on the horizon.
According to the Ministry, that work will begin in the spring and the Province will be tendering the project in the coming weeks.
The next update on the project is expected to come in the spring, which is when residents and travellers can expect to know more about its effects on Hwy 97 next year.
The Province says that the permanent repair work will “further enhance safety and reduce further risks” once it’s complete.
