Craft Culture launches ‘The Local Box’ to help support market vendors

As the future of large gatherings remains unclear, Craft Culture has launched an initiative to help support market vendors.

Craft Culture has been organizing craft and artisan markets in the Okanagan for the past seven years. The pandemic forced them to cancel several major markets.

The Local Box is a collection of handmade items from vendors you would normally find at the Spring Markets in Penticton and Kelowna.

Craft Culture says that the box is $60 and has a retail value of $120.

Craft Culture added that their vendors, who are currently feeling the pressure of cancelled markets due to COVID19, have filled the boxes with items that locals will “know and love.”

The contents are a surprise, but customers can expect items like soaps, jewellery, and food items.

A new box will be introduced each month offering a wide variety of products.

“By purchasing one box, you are supporting 9 local businesses,” says Craft Culture owner Karalyn Lockhart.

“Not only has the pandemic been a big blow to the event industry, it has seriously impacted our vendors ability to earn a living. The majority of our 500+ Craft Culture vendors rely on markets across the country to sell their products.”

The Local Box can be shipped across Canada, or picked up at local partnering businesses including Meadow Vista Honey Wines, BNA Brewing, and Elizabeth O Vintage.

The boxes are geared towards women, but there is one for Father’s Day, which includes six items that can be delivered by June 21.

“We’re doing everything we can to support these businesses, and make it easy for our customers to support local,” added Lockhart. “The Local Box is a fun and easy way to shop local, and invites a bit of joy and excitement back into our daily lives.”

“It’s so amazing to see other businesses in the community re-open this month, but unfortunately there’s no light at the end of the tunnel for our industry.”

Lockhart is remaining hopeful for a normal Holiday Market Season – a time in which vendors earn the majority of their annual income – but they are also preparing in case that’s not possible.

“We are looking at focusing on smaller, socially distanced markets for the rest of year, but even those are prohibited as of today if selling non-essential items. This order expires at the end of the month, so we are crossing our fingers for some positive news from Dr. Bonnie Henry.”
