Advanced voting has begun for Summerland residents to decide if the district should borrow up to $50 million with interest for a new recreational facility.
The municipality is holding two advanced voting days in October with the big voting day happening on the first Saturday of November.
Eligible voters will be asked to vote in favour or against funding the new recreation centre which would replace the aging Summerland Aquatic and Fitness Centre, which the municipality says has come to the end of its service life.
Voters will be asked the following question: “Do you support the Corporation of the District of Summerland borrowing up to $50 million with interest, over a period not exceeding 30 years in order to finance the construction of a new recreation centre to be located at 8820 Jubilee Road E., by way of Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 2023-016?”
The new facility would include an aquatic centre with a lap pool, leisure pool, hot tub, sauna or steam room; fitness centre; fitness/activity multi-purpose room; family/youth multi purpose room and a universal accessible change rooms.
The building would also be built with more modern energy efficiency building standards, the district says.
Over the past few weeks, the district has been sharing detailed information about the project in preparation for the general voting day.
Advanced voting will be taking place on Oct. 26 and Oct. 31 from 8 am to 8 pm at the Summerland Arena Banquet Room.
General voting day will happen at the same place on Nov. 4 from 8 am to 8 pm.
Eligible voters must be 18 or older, be a Canadian citizen, be a BC resident for at least six months, be a resident of Summerland and not be disqualified from voting under the Local Government Act.
