Police suspect impairment a factor in fatal head-on crash on BC highway

One person is dead and two others have been hospitalized after a head-on crash in northern BC over the weekend.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Hwy 16 west of Raymond Road, just outside Smithers, on Sunday afternoon.

According to a BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) release, an eastbound pickup truck and a westbound SUV collided head-on while travelling “at highway speeds.”

Unfortunately, despite life-saving efforts from first responders, the driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both the driver of the pickup and the passenger in the SUV were rushed to hospital with what the BCHP called “serious injuries.”

While the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, the BCHP noted that impairment is suspected to be a factor.

“We send our deepest condolences to the families of those involved and have engaged our victim services team to support them,” said Cpl. Kevin Weeres from BCHP Smithers.

“I would like to thank our partners BC Emergency Health Services, Smithers Fire and hospital staff for their assistance and great work during this event.”

Anyone who witnessed this crash or has relevant dash cam footage of either vehicle in the lead-up to the incident is urged to contact the Smithers RCMP at 250-847-3233.
