We are only three days away from one of the must-see country music events of the year here in the valley.
Old Dominion is all set to rip through the South Okanagan Events Centre on Saturday night, helping country fans shake those winter blues away by cranking up the heat.
In addition to sharing the stage with Mitchell Tenpenny, rising star Meghan Patrick is also on the bill and eager to prove she is a force to be reckoned with all on her own.
Having made incredible strides within the industry since her 2016 debut Grace & Grit, Patrick has been blazing a trail within the country music sphere, collecting many awards, writing chart-topping hits and gaining a loyal fan base along the way.
While country music can often be known as a ‘boys club,’ Patrick much like her predecessors Terri Clark or Shania Twain, refuses to have her gender and any stereotypes that come with it, be a deciding factor for her success within the industry.
“To be honest, I am kind of tired of the conversation surrounding women in country music and the disparity,” said Patrick.
“I definitely have a lot of females who I have been inspired by like Terri Clark and her journey, so I am just leading by example and ready to prove everybody wrong,” she added. “I don’t want to be seen as a victim or someone who needs extra attention, I am out here to make music.”
Though she may be an opening act this time around, Patrick is hot off the release of her latest EP Wild As Me, and is in the midst of curating her first-ever headlining tour, in addition to gearing up for a radio tour around the US.
“Being able to be on my own headlining tour is pretty special,” said Patrick, mentioning that it was one of her goals for this year. “For me, it is about being able to set a precedent for my fans and showing the industry that I can sell tickets and have a fan base.”
While we may not be seeing her on her own this weekend, Patrick ensures her short set was built with fan desires in mind.
“We have tried to choose the songs based on what ones are hits and what the audience wants to hear,” she said. Adding that the setlist will also include recent singles like “Praying Right,” “Girls Like Me” and “Chaser.”
“I really like performing all of those songs [off the new EP] all for different reasons,” mentioned Patrick. “Some because they get the party going and others because they have been really impactful for fans and offer cool moments to strip things down.”
This tour will be the singer-songwriter’s first time sharing the stage with Old Dominion, though they have both played alongside each other at various festivals.
“Old Dominion knows how to put on a show, so I think it is going to be great. I hope everyone has fun and gets to hear the songs they want to.”
