VIDEO: Meeting of the alt-right group 'Diagolon' sparks condemnation in Kelowna

Antihate.ca issued a warning about the meet-up on the Kelowna Reddit page.

There, it was described as a 'white nationalist meet and greet.'

The post has now been taken down by Reddit.

The group Diagolon was apparently planning a get-together in the city.

Diagolon is an extremist organization known for alt-right views and sometimes violent rhetoric.

The administrator of the Facebook page 'Anti-Racism Kelowna' is Brent Forder.

"I've heard about this only through social media," said Forder."

I'm not too familiar with these groups involved, but it does worry me," said Forder.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan said it was warned that 'Diagolon' planned to host an event at Bertram Creek Park.

But the group did not have an event permit according to the RDCO which issued a statement on the subject.

"The RDCO does not condone the actions or rhetoric of this organization."

The Diagalon movement uses a white diagonal slash against a black backdrop as its flag.

Park rangers and bylaw officers attended to monitor activity in the park, but in the end, there wasn't much to see.

"There was a small gathering of less than 20 people having a BBQ in the amphitheatre," the RDCO said in a statement. "No signs or speeches were observed."

But he believes it's important to bring these things to the forefront.

"I think visibility is important," said Forder. "I think the status quo is that there is a lot of hate in our culture, a lot of white supremacy, and it is mostly invisible."

Forder's reaction to this event going on in Kelowna:

"It's a little bit scary," he said. "Kelowna is a place where things do happen. "There was an incident a year ago where a Sikh man was pulled off of a bus and his turban was pulled off."

So Forder said there is work to do.

"We need to do more to make everyone safe and welcome in Kelowna."
