The 127 employees out of work due to Kelowna’s Tolko mill shutdown are the subject of a new program from WorkBC.
According to WorkBC, the government agency is preparing a services program to help the employees who have been off the job since the mill temporarily shut down in September.
“We’ll be offering special workshops to help you prepare for whatever comes next in your career,” said WorkBC in a press release.
"It’s our mission to support our community during challenging times. Join us for the next info session or apply to be a case managed client to get the full benefit! You could be eligible for financial supports, skills training and job placement services."
Tolko’s decision to shut down its Kelowna mill indefinitely in September came at the end of a month-long “downtime” period that began on Aug. 6.
However, the mill first reduced shifts from two rotations to one at the beginning of July.
As a result, Tolko employees haven’t seen a full paycheque in five months.
The company permanently closed its sawmill in Quesnel in August and implemented similar "downtime" periods at its mill in Armstrong.
