While it’s still early in the spring, the risk of flooding in the Okanagan this year is not considered high.
However, the quickly rising temperatures mean the spring freshet is underway and you can never be too careful, especially if you live in a flood-prone area.
To help residents prepare for the worst, the City of Kelowna has put out sand as a precautionary measure at three locations along Mill Creek.
Residents who want to protect their property can find the sand at these locations:
Empty sandbags are available at the Kelowna Fire Department Station #1 at 2255 Enterprise Way.
“Freshet is the process of snowpack melt and run-off into local streams and creeks that arrives every year between April and May,” explains a City release.
“The potential for flooding exists every year, and property owners living near creeks, streams, low-lying areas and lakefronts should have a plan in place to protect their property.”
April numbers from the BC River Forecast Centre show that snowpacks in the Okanagan are only slightly above normal for this time of year.
