The BC police watchdog is investigating after a Mountie was shot during the pursuit of a suspicious vehicle out of Kelowna.
According to the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC, the officer was shot by a fellow Mountie on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
The RCMP, meanwhile, said “preliminary information at this time” suggests the gunshot wound was caused by a fellow officer.
The wounded officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later released, police added.
In a statement issued last night, the RCMP said officers in Kelowna spotted a “suspicious” F-350 truck and began to follow it as it drove along Hwy 33 towards Carmi.
After driving through “multiple jurisdictions,” the truck then headed up a forest service road towards Midway, police explained.
At about 1:30 pm, a mixed group of officers – including plainclothes cops from Penticton and Kelowna as well as officers with dogs – attempted to stop the truck and arrest its occupants.
They succeeded, arresting two people, one of whom received a “non-serious dog bite.”
It was during this incident that the officer was shot.
Police said no further comment will be provided pending the investigation by the IIO.
The IIO is asking for anyone with relevant information to call its witness line at 1-855-446-8477, or get in touch via the iiobc.ca website.
