UPDATE: Kelowna RCMP officers being investigated after man found dead near UBCO

(UPDATE: June 4 @ 6:05 am): Kelowna officers are being investigated after a man died following an early morning crash near UBCO on Monday.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) will attempt to determine whether the man, who was ejected from his car after a single-vehicle collision on Bulman Road, could have been saved.

Signs of a crash were first noticed at about 1:15 am near the intersection of Hwy 97 N and University Way, but an attending officer did not see a vehicle and so took no further action.

At 5:50 am, Mounties were told that a crash site had been discovered at Bulman Road, a bike trail running parallel to Hwy 97.

A man, believed to be the driver, was found dead nearby.

"The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played in the death of the man, including if the search location was the same as the collision and whether the man could have been saved, given his injuries," the investigators explained.

"The BC Coroners Service is also conducting an independent investigation to determine how, where, when and by what means he came to his death.

"The IIO is asking that any person who saw, heard or recorded the incident to contact the IIO Witness Line toll free at 1-855-446-8477."

(Original story: June 1 @ 9:55 am): A fatal rollover crash just off of Hwy 97, near UBCO, this morning is under investigation.

Emergency crews were called to the 3100 block of Bulman Road this morning for reports of the crash, which ejected the lone occupant from his vehicle.

He was declared dead at the scene.

Crews have closed the road as they process the scene and had also closed one northbound lane of Hwy 97 earlier, which caused delays, but it has since reopened.

“This collision was not reported when it occurred,” said Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy.

“We are asking anyone who witnessed the collision, or has any information, to come forward and speak with us.”

The BC Coroners Service is also investigating to determine the man’s identity and how, where, when and by what means he came to his unexpected death.

No further details will be shared at this time.
