Kelowna council praises 60-unit apartment building on Coronation Avenue

Kelowna City Council praised the form and character of a proposed 60-unit apartment building which would be located at Coronation Avenue.

With an unanimous vote, city council agreed to issue development permits for a six-storey building which will be located at 608, 618, 624 and 632 Coronation Ave.

According to the report presented to council on Monday, there would be 25 bachelor, 20 one-bedroom and 15 two-bedroom units in the building. Five of those would be ground-oriented townhomes.

The applicant, BlueGreen Architecture, explains that the building will include 58 parking spaces, a large amenity deck on the roof which would contain landscaping, a firepit and outdoor kitchen.

Councillor Charlie Hodge, who is often advocating for more amenity space for tenants, was very pleased with the design of this building.

“We get a lot of apartment buildings and complexes put before us and quite often they’re pretty dull,” stated councillor Hodge.

“This particular one is far from that but it goes to show, in my mind, a real creative flair.”

Although councillor Hodge would like to see more green space, he noted that the outdoor amenity provided for a nice space for future tenants.

Councillor Luke Stack agreed with his colleague and thought the way the five townhomes front onto the street was creative and different while providing a nice amenity space.

Councillor Loyal Wooldridge agreed that the proposal was noteworthy and would make for a unique building.

“I really wanted to applaud the applicant on the form and character on this building,” said councillor Wooldridge

“Specifically, for me, it was the articulation of the outdoor space, the patios and it just looks unique. We see a lot of multi-family come forward and often they’re very square boxes and this one definitely set itself apart.”

Next steps for this proposal will include the issuance of building permits which is expected to happen in the coming weeks.
