Fast track development process terminated early due to oversaturation

Kelowna has decided to terminate its fast track development permit process for RU7 projects a few months early.

On Monday, city planners told council the program was so successful over the past three years that there's concern over a lack of design diversity along streetscapes.

The fast track program allowed property owners in RU7 neighbourhoods to skip the development and building permit application process by choosing between two predetermined home designs.

The exemption generally expedited the rezoning process between six to eight weeks.

Overall, 32 fast track permits were issued, 28 of the traditional design and four of the modern design, creating a total of 128 new residential units.

"This was a very creative initiative, very positive results," commented councillor Luke Stack.

City planners said the fast track process could be revisited in the future with the potential to incorporate new home designs.
