25 electric mopeds approved for Kelowna’s share service program

Another unique transportation option has been approved by the City of Kelowna.

On Thursday, active transportation manager Matt Worona confirmed that Loop has been awarded a permit to deploy 25 electric mopeds in the city.

“Kelowna is the first city in Canada to permit a company to deliver shared e-mopeds services,” said Worona.

“Other North American cities that allow shared e-mopeds include New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco and Austin.”

Unlike Kelowna’s controversial e-scooter service, the electronic mopeds are allowed on roads in BC.

However, the small vehicles are not permitted on bike lanes and pathways.

Riders will also be required to wear a helmet, stored in a locked compartment in the rear of each vehicle, and hold a Class 5 license.

The company is permitted to deploy its fleet of 25 e-mopeds at any time, but no specific date has been announced.
