(UPDATE: Oct. 26 @ 3:35 pm) – Kamloops students of a school that caught fire early Sunday morning will not be going to class on Monday.
In an update from the local school board, Westmount Elementary School is closed until further notice and there will be no access to the school for several weeks.
“As a result, Westmount students will not be in session tomorrow, Monday, October 27, 2025, as district and school staff make a transition and relocation plan for students,” wrote the district.
“Westmount parents have been asked to make alternate arrangements for the supervision of their children tomorrow.”
The district added that students will be relocated to a nearby school and return to class on Tuesday.
Staff and parents of the school can expect an update on Monday afternoon about the transition and relocation plans. The update will also include information about transportation and support for students.
District staff are working with a fire inspector to determine the extent of the damage and to initiate remediation.

In the early hours of Sunday, police were called to Westmount Elementary School because of a fire.
The Kamloops Fire Rescue also attended, extinguishing the flames.
“It appears that there was someone on the roof of the school when the fire broke out,” said Staff Sgt. Chris Kienzle.
“The fire is believed to be intentionally set, and our investigation is ongoing.”
