Kamloops This Week’s 72-page final edition was delivered this morning

It's the end of the line for Kamloops This Week.

The final edition of the newspaper was delivered this morning and the website will go quiet today after 35 years of serving the Kamloops community.

For the first time since 1884, the city of Kamloops, which boasts a population over 100,000 people, is without a newspaper.

As one might expect, the final edition is a doozie, with 72 pages of history, thank yous and plenty of thoughts from both journalists and members of the public.

The front cover features the -30- mark, which may leave some readers confused but is certainly an important symbol to those who worked in the industry.

“The dash-30 has been traditionally used by journalists to indicate the end of a story or article that has been filed for publication,” the final edition explains on page A37.

“In the days of typewriters, it was a way to indicate the last page of a story or column in case the separate pages of a story were mixed up in the editing process before being prepared for press.”

Also of note in the final edition is a call for help in potentially creating a new newspaper for Kamloops, which is one of the first things you see after you open the cover to page A2.

Some former Kamloops This week employees are hatching a plan to revive a newspaper in Kamloops, and say they have a plan, but need funding to get it off the ground.

“We are asking the residents, philanthropists, businesses and community-driven individuals of Kamloops if they would like to support us through financial donations and in-kind business advice,” it reads.

“We know there are jobs available today and we can pack up and do something new. However, these employees still feel Kamloops This Week provides an invaluable community service – through its investigative reporting, opinion pages, sports stories, community events coverage and more – so we wanted to gauge community interest before walking away for good.”

They say they have the right people in the right places and a retooled business model, and are asking anyone interested in supporting the potential venture to email [email protected].

If you are in Kamloops and want to say hi, and bye for now, to the Kamloops This Week staff, they will be hosting an open house from 1-5 pm on Thursday at 1365B Dalhousie Dr.
