The Thompson Rivers University student who drowned in the Thompson River has been identified through a fundraiser set up by a friend.
On Tuesday, the Kamloops RCMP confirmed a body had been found after the student entered the river to retrieve a volleyball earlier this month.
The student has since been identified as 27-year-old Jatin Garg.
According to the fundraiser, Garg had just arrived in Canada to study in August 2024.
“In less than a year, he touched countless lives with his smile, his energy, and his gentle heart,” the fundraiser said.
“No one could have imagined that his journey would be cut so short.”
He was described as “full of dreams, kindness and warmth.”
Money raised will support funeral arrangements and help send Garg home to his family, “who are shattered and awaiting his return in India.”
As of Thursday morning, $21,817 has been raised with a goal of $28,000.
According to an update from KSAR, Garg’s body was found near McArthur Island by a KSAR member who was “intentionally but unofficially” paddling on the river.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the deceased,” the updated KSAR statement said.
“We wish you all strength in this difficult time and hope that you will find peace in the days ahead.”
The statement thanked the countless hours put in by the KSAR team and RCMP partners.
