Schools nearly out for summer, but students are actually returning to classrooms for the first time in months.
According to the BC government, nearly 60,000 students, or about 30% of the province’s enrollment, returned to the classroom on Monday, June 1.
At the high end of the return rate were Grade 6 students at about 48.3%, while only about 14.5% of Grade 12 students went back to in-class instruction.
Schools accomodating kindergarten to Grade 5 students are limited to 50% capacity, with Grade 6 to Grade 12 schools are only permitted to have 20% of students in classrooms.
Children of essential service workers are being offered full-time classroom instruction, while other families are given the choice of whether to send their kids back to the classroom or to continue with online learning.
However, families who change their minds about sending their kids back to class are being asked to contact administrators beforehand so the school can plan to support additional students.
Staggered drop-offs, lunch breaks and increased outside time will be practiced at each school.
