‘No evidence of community transmission’ from COVID-19 outbreak at OCC

Interior Health has released more details on the COVID-19 outbreak at Okanagan Correctional Centre, which was announced by Dr. Bonnie Henry on Thursday.

Three staff members at the prison have tested positive for the virus and are currently in isolation at home.

Contact tracing is underway to identify anyone else that may have been exposed to COVID-19.

“There is no evidence of community transmission, and we are closely monitoring the situation,” said a release from IH.

“Based on the initial findings, the staff members were exposed to COVID-19 at an off-site two-day training session.”

IH has put all the necessary infection control precautions in place at OCC to protect those who are in custody.

This is the second outbreak at the South Okanagan jail, the first of which happened in early April.

Visits to the institution have been restricted since March 12 and new inmates who enter the facility are isolated for 14 days to prevent them from introducing COVID-19 to the jail.
