Latest COVID-19 data shows case numbers has spiked, but hospitalizations have dropped

Health officials presented BC's latest COVID-19 data modeling on Wednesday, providing the province's first update since seeing a rapid rise in cases.

That increase in cases has mostly been in people aged 20 to 40 years old and is being driven by exposures in the workplace and gatherings.

"We've moved from mostly household contacts to exposure at bars, clubs and parties that are more difficult to contact trace," explained Dr. Bonnie Henry.

"Once we restarted we knew we were going to see more cases and we need to continue to manage that through contact tracing."

However, that same demographic is hospitalized at a much lower rate than those over the age of 60.

In total, of the 551 people who have been hospitalized with the virus, 57 have been under the age of 40 and just three have been under the age of 20.

No one under the age of 40 has died from the virus in BC.

Meanwhile, BC has increased its level of social interactions from around 30% of normal in April to around 70% of normal in recent weeks.

If that number were to increase to 80%, the current trend of 75 new cases a day could surge past 100.

On Thursday, BC reported 78 more cases over the past 24 hours, most of which again were from the Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health regions.
