Must do's in the garden for August

Summer is still upon us, why not enjoy the great weather with some time in the garden or patio garden?! There is a lot you can do to still get the most out of your garden this fall and summer, and also prepare your garden for next year!

Read on to learn about the gardening must-do’s for August – from the garden experts at Bylands:

Cut back annuals

Annuals may become leggy at this point, so cut them back hard and fertilize them to promote new blooms!

A post shared by Garden, Gifts & Floral (@bylandsgardencentre) on

Make sure you're watering enough

Remember to deep water when watering so you don’t have to water it as often. Deep watering your lawn 2-3 times per week is all that you should need.

Shrubs and trees should be soaked to a depth of 8-10 inches.

Care for roses

Continue spraying roses that are susceptible to black spot and mildew.

Keep your garden tidy and healthy

It’s a good time to divide perennials such as bleeding heart, bloodroot, Madonna lillies and Iris at this time.

What this will do will keep your garden tidy and healthy, encourage plants to bloom, and get more plants to put elsewhere!

Prune the fruit tree branches that are heavy with fruit to prevent branches from breaking.

This is also a great time of year to prune and shape evergreen hedges.

Prepare a bountiful fruit harvest

Put netting over fruit trees to help prevent birds from eating the fruit. Or try something shiny to deter them – try using foil streamers (aka bird scare tape) or foil pie plates.

Don't fertilize after August 15th

Don’t fertilize trees and shrubs after the 15th of August as you don’t want to create a lot of new growth heading in the fall months!

However, annuals can still be fertilized as usual so they continue blooming until they freeze up!

We hope these gardening tips and tricks help you beautify your living space for seasons to come!

Come chat with the team at Bylands if you need any further help! Happy Gardening!
