Texas man, 37, who went missing in the Kootenays found dead after car left highway

A Texas couple’s trip to British Columbia came to a tragic and unthinkable end over the weekend.

A 37-year-old El Paso man was found dead off Hwy 3A/6 near Nelson on Sunday, just hours after being reported missing late Saturday night.

The man had travelled to the Kootenays with his wife and they were staying in South Slocan, an unincorporated community of around 100 people.

According to police, the man drove to visit his brother in Nelson on Saturday, but never made it back to South Slocan.

His wife reported him missing around 11:35 pm and the RCMP.

Shortly before 8 am Sunday, a friend of the missing man called the Nelson RCMP to report that the 37-year-old had been involved in a single-vehicle crash near Beasley.

Officers went to the scene and were able to find the 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser the man was driving around 60-70 metres down an embankment.

Police said the man had been ejected from the vehicle and was located a short distance away.

He was pronounced dead at the scene once paramedics arrived.

The RCMP notes that there’s “no indication” drugs and alcohol were involved in the crash, and the BC Coroners Service was notified.
