Kootenay man dies after lighting a fire behind a building

A Castlegar man has succumbed to his injuries after being engulfed in an outdoor fire.

Shortly after 1 am on Oct. 23, emergency services in Castlegar were alerted to a fire behind a business in the 1700 block of Columbia Avenue.

“Upon attendance, the fire was active, engulfing a male and personal items on the ground,” wrote the RCMP.

“The fire was extinguished and the 70-year-old Castlegar man was transported to the hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to injuries.”

An investigation into the matter, which included reviewing surveillance footage, determined the man arrived at the location alone.

After some time, he started a fire, potentially for light or warmth, and then the blaze spread to him and his items.

Police are continuing to help the BC Coroner Service and Castlegar Fire Department with their investigations.
