Police have now confirmed a crash that shuttered Hwy 3 through the Kootenays for several hours over the weekend was fatal.
Emergency crews responded to the multi-vehicle crash, east of Creston and south of Cranbrook, around 4:45 pm Sunday.
The initial investigation has found that a southbound Subaru lost control on snowy roads and drifted into an oncoming commercial tractor trailer.
Unfortunately, a 32-year-old man from Vancouver who was in the front passenger seat of the Subaru was declared dead at the scene.
The driver of the Subaru was transported to hospital with serious injuries, while the driver of the commercial vehicle was uninjured.
Hwy 3 was closed for the remainder of Sunday night as police investigated, gathered evidence and recovered the vehicles involved in the crash. It reopened early Monday morning.
The BC Highway Patrol’s Cranbrook division is continuing the investigation into the fatal accident.
Anyone with information regarding the crash, including dash cam footage of either vehicle involved in the lead up to the collision, is urged to contact BCHP Cranbrook at 250-420-4244.
