People are rallying to support two children that were left injured and without their parents after a fatal crash in Salmon Arm earlier this month.
The head-on crash on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) on Sunday, Oct. 2, claimed the lives of Mike and Robin Martel.
The young couple’s two children, Maverick, 8, and Bailee Jo, 5, were in the car at the time of the accident and were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Mike’s cousin Nadine Bouchard created a GoFundMe to support the children and it has raised over $65,000 so far.
“This account is set up to help with anything the children need while being cared for by the loving staff at BC Children’s Hospital,” Bouchard wrote. “Any extra will be placed in trust for the children’s future.”
The Martel family was involved with Whalley Little League and the organization took to Facebook on Monday to share the fundraiser with its members.
It revealed that Maverick has already had multiple surgeries for fractures of both femurs and a crushed hand.
Bailee Jo underwent surgery to fuse her neck and repair fractures in her lower leg and wrist.
Both children are now conscious and have begun their lengthy road to recovery, the post said, but will need long-term medical attention, physical rehab and counselling.
“Fortunately, their aunt and grandmother have been able to come from Saskatchewan to be with them,” noted the post.
“Aunt Lalayne and their small extended family will take care of them through their recovery and then will raise them as their own.”
