UPDATE: Fire near Cathedral Provincial Park being held, evacuation alert remains

(UPDATE: July 13 @ 1:25 pm) - Fire activity at the Lower Young Creek wildfire near Cathedral Provincial Park has significantly decreased and the status of the blaze has been changed to being held.

In the latest update from the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), resources at the fire are continuing to finish a machine guard and a wet line. Crews are also beginning to mop up the area and patrol for hot spots within the perimeter.

The size of the wildfire remains at 50 hectares.


(Original story: July 12 @ 8:45 am) -The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen Emergency Operations Centre (RDOS EOC) activated last night to issue evacuation alerts for a wildfire near Cathedral Provincial Park.

The Young Creek wildfire is located approximately 21 kilometres on Ashnola Road and the following areas are on evacuation alert:

  • Cathedral Lake Lodge
  • Lake of the Woods Campground
  • Twin Buttes Campground
  • Cathedral Lake
  • Pyramid Lake
  • Ladyslipper Lake

According to the latest update from the BC Wildfire Service, the blaze is out of control and 50 hectares in size.

The fire is being attacked by nearly three dozen firefighters, a pair of helicopters and heavy equipment.

“RDOS EOC is working closely with Upper Similkameen Indian Band (USIB) and Lower Similkameen Indian Band (LSIB),” states the RDOS EOC.

“BC Wildfire Service is responding. The RDOS EOC has been activated to a level one event for monitoring. More information will be provided when available.”
