8 improvement projects planned for BC Interior highways

Eight road improvement projects spanning 630 kilometres are getting underway in the Southern Interior this summer.

That includes projects in the Okanagan, the Shuswap, the west Kootenays, the Similkameen, North Thompson and Columbia region.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Transit says one of those projects involves 88 km of lanes (lane km) on Highway 97 and nearby side roads between Vernon and Oyama being resurfaced.

The $11-million contact is expected to be completed later this summer.

In the Central Okanagan, 77 lane km of asphalt will be resurfaced on Highway 97 in West Kelowna and Highway 33 in Rutland.

A total of 80 lane km of Highway 97 and area side roads will be resurfaced between Trout Lake and Summerland.

“In 2025, almost $57 million is being invested to resurface southern Interior highways and local roads, ensuring a safe and comfortable driving experience,” the Ministry said.

Crews will be seal coating 103 lane km on Hwy 23 from Nakusp to Galena Bay.

Meanwhile, in the Shuswap, Hwy 1 asphalt resurfacing will be done on 46 km near Malakwa.

Highway 3 between Sunday Summit and Princeton will get an asphalt touch up.

Further north, Hwy 5 from Cedarside to Tete Jaune and side roads will see asphalt resurfacing as well.

Columbia Valley side roads will also get new asphalt.
