2 bodies found, 3rd hiker presumed dead after group goes over waterfall in the Kootenays

The search is ongoing for a 35-year-old man that went over Meachen Creek Falls in the Kootenays on Monday.

The bodies of the man’s hiking partners, two women aged 35 and 65, have already been found over the past two days and the RCMP says the man is presumed dead as well.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased,” an RCMP statement noted.

Kimberley Mounties were alerted by a GPS SOS on Monday that the three hikers fell into Meachen Creek Falls, located in the backcountry west of Kimberley and Cranbrook.

A search ensued involving Kimberley Search and Rescue, Bighorn Helicopters, the RCMP’s Police Dog Services and a drone.

A media release issued by police on Tuesday informed the public that the 65-year-old woman’s body was located.

This morning, a second media release revealed the same for the 35-year-old woman and work is underway to recover her body today.

The RCMP says a police investigation is ongoing, but none of the deaths are believed to be suspicious.
