Poll unveils Canada's most and least respected professions

If you want to be respected, your best bet is to pursue a career in healthcare.

A new poll released today shows who's on top, and who’s on the bottom when it comes to the country's respect.

Nurses and doctors both cracked the top five in most respected professions, with 91% of Canadians having a positive opinion of nurses and 87% a positive opinion of doctors.

The most respected profession? That title went to Canada's firefighters.

For the third year running, the survey found politicians (22%) and car salespeople (26%) to be the least respected jobs in Canada.

Other poor performers in the poll were pollsters (42%), business executives and realtors (47%) and lawyers (48%).

The group that saw the biggest growth in respect was journalists, according to the survey. Journalists were viewed positively by just 58% of respondents in 2016, and 62% in 2017.

Also of note in the survey is a generational gap in the perception of police officers.

The poll found that a third of millennials had a negative view of police, compared to 23% for generation X, and 19% for baby boomers.
