5 things you need to know this morning: Sept. 9, 2025

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Israel targets Hamas leadership in Qatar

Israel has done it again – this time in Qatar. The Israel Defence Forces said today it has targeted the leadership of Hamas in Doha, the Qatari capital, in an operation it linked to the October 7, 2023 massacre. Qatar has responded with fury, accusing Israel of violating international law.

2. Following Carney's U-turn on EV mandate, CBC now discovers pause 'might not be bad for the climate'

In a coincidence of astronomical proportions, the CBC has published an article this morning declaring that Mark Carney's controversial decision to pause the EV sales mandate "might not be bad for the climate." Interviewing "climate policy researchers" and EV industry insiders, the public broadcaster has learned that everything could be hunky-dory after all, which is no doubt excellent news for the Liberal leadership as it attempts to quell disquiet within the party over Carney's approach to the environment.

3. Alberta government says ban on books containing sex will affect only images

The Alberta government has followed through on its promise to revise its policy of banning books from schools if they contain sexual material. Now books that contain written descriptions of sex will be permitted, but images of sex will be forbidden. It means books such as Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita – about the grooming and repeated rape of a child by the man caring for her – will not be prohibited in schools.

4. Canadian man sentenced to 10 years for promoting anti-Jewish propaganda

A man from Ottawa has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for promoting propaganda against the Jewish people. Patrick Gordon MacDonald was also convicted of facilitating terrorist activities.

5. Carney praises offshore oil plan during visit to Newfoundland

Mark Carney told a crowd in St. John's, Newfoundland on Monday that an offshore oilfield and a hydro deal with Quebec could boost the economy in Canada's easternmost province. Carney's positive appraisal of the plans came after Premier John Hogan pitched them as ideal candidates for inclusion on the prime minister's list of "nation-building projects."
