5 things you need to know this morning: Sept. 2, 2025

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Poverty, bullying, sickness all on the rise among Canadian children: report

Poverty, sickness and bullying are all on the rise among Canadian kids, according to a report released by the Children First Canada charity on the first day of school. The study claims 70 per cent of Canadians aged 12 to 17 experienced bullying last year, while 13 per cent were living in poverty.

2. Quebec refuses cash from Ottawa for program based on idea justice system is racist

The Quebec government has rejected funding from Ottawa aimed at tackling what the Liberal Party considers to be "systemic racism" in Canada's criminal justice system. Quebec, however, said it "doesn't subscribe to the approach on which the funding program is based, namely systemic racism." The program is based on the contentious idea that there are a disproportionate number of black people in the justice system because of racism, and aims to change that by making officials consider how racism may have contributed to a person's criminal charges before proceeding with a case.

3. Canola farmers 'feel like they're being sacrificed to support eastern Canadian industries'

As Canada continues to endure the consequences of a disastrous trade war – no, not that one: the one with China – one market analyst has estimated that canola farmers have lost a collective $800 million. Chuck Penner said the farmers, who are based in the Prairies, "feel like they're being sacrificed to support eastern Canadian industries." The premiers of both Alberta and Saskatchewan have said the Liberals should drop their 100 per cent tariff on Chinese EVs, which is reckoned to be the cause of China's tariffs on Canada's $40-billion-a-year canola sector.

4. Dozens of Liberal MPs sign letter demanding action against antisemitism

Dozens of Liberal MPs – nearly a fifth of the entire caucus – have signed a letter calling for more to be done in the face of rising anti-Jewish racism in Canada. It comes after a Jewish woman in her 70s was stabbed in an Ottawa grocery store last month in what police are calling a "hate-motivated crime." The Tories' Melissa Lantsman, however, said the Liberals "don't see a problem – or see votes."

5. British comedian arrested by armed police, banned from X over social media posts

The creator of some of the most successful TV shows in recent UK history has been arrested by armed police over posts he made on X. Graham Linehan also said he has been prohibited from using X by the British authorities.
