Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Mixed response as Carney says Canada recognizes Palestine

The prime minister announced that Canada will join the UK, Portugal and Australia in formally recognizing the State of Palestine on Sunday, sparking both praise and condemnation. The Conservatives, the US, Israel and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs joined others in rebuking Mark Carney over the move, while the Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East group hailed the development.

2. Trump hails 'martyr' and 'great hero' Kirk, chats with Musk at memorial service

US President Donald Trump hailed murdered political activist Charlie Kirk as a "great American hero" and "martyr" at a memorial service in Arizona on Sunday. The president also sat and talked with Elon Musk, marking an apparent end to the duo's bitter feud over the Republican Party's commitment to massive spending despite the US's estimated $37.5 trillion national debt.

3. Champagne says Canada putting 'house in order,' can now be 'supplier of choice' for Europeans

Open the bubbly: Minister Champagne reckons Canada could become a "supplier of choice" for the Europeans now that the country has put its "house in order" and become "more competitive." The minister of finance added: "We are redesigning the world economic order at a speed and at a scale that I would say has not been seen in a generation."

4. Morrissey cancels shows after Canadian man accused of posting death threat on Bluesky

English pop star Morrissey has cancelled two of his shows in the US after allegedly being targeted with a death threat by an Ottawa man. The 26-year-old man from the nation's capital has been bailed after he was alleged to have threatened to shoot the former Smiths singer in a post on left-wing social media site Bluesky.

5. Some Indians furious as Trump attaches $100K fee to H-1B visas

A member of the Indian government has reacted furiously to Donald Trump's decision to attach a $100,000 fee to H-1B visas, which are dominated by Indians, claiming the US is "afraid of our talent." The White House, however, said the scheme, ostensibly designed for highly skilled workers, had been "abused" by American firms and had harmed workers.
