5 things you need to know this morning: May 26, 2025

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Liberals vote against giving themselves power to ditch leader

Liberal MPs have voted against giving themselves the power to get rid of their leader via the Reform Act. The decision-making process among MPs will remain private, according to Caucus Chair James Maloney, who added: "What happens in caucus stays in caucus."

2. Poilievre says he's willing to work with Carney despite PM's 'elbows down' approach

Tory Leader Pierre Poilievre has said he's willing to work with Mark Carney's government in Parliament to bring an end to the trade war with the US, but insisted he's still going to push the Liberals to release a spring budget. Poilievre, who is no longer an MP, also accused the PM of adopting an "elbows down" approach to the US by mostly ditching his much-publicized counter-tariffs.

3. Academic says Liberals 'don't necessarily' believe in new crime stance

An academic at the University of Ottawa has said the Liberals' promise to be tough on crime reminds him of a similar pledge from US President Bill Clinton. The Democrat, like Mark Carney, went ahead with stricter punishments for criminals, but Justin Piché said: "I don't necessarily think it's because he believed in them. I think it was because he didn't want to get outflanked on the right on these issues and lose power and the ability to govern more broadly." The Grits have pledged to introduce tougher bail conditions as well as new criminal offences.

4. Landowners finding it 'shocking' that Crown can explore their land for minerals

As Canada races towards expanding its natural resources sector, some property owners in Nova Scotia have been left unhappy after the province selected their land for possible uranium exploration. Ward Blatch, one of those landowners, said it's "quite shocking," but in Nova Scotia, land ownership does not include mineral rights, which are the possession of the Crown.

5. Trump says Putin 'has gone absolutely CRAZY'

US President Donald Trump has said "something has happened" to Vladimir Putin, writing that the Russian president "has gone absolutely CRAZY." Trump made the remarks after Russia bombed Ukrainian cities in its latest attack on civilians.
