5 things you need to know this morning: May 25, 2023

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. DeSantis launches GOP presidential campaign on Twitter

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis launched his 2024 presidential campaign on Wednesday in a Twitter Spaces conversation with Elon Musk. It was plagued by glitches, which Musk blamed on the servers being unable to handle so many users, but the campaign still raised $1 million USD in only an hour after the announcement.

2. Blue Jays season ticket holders shocked over price increase

Those renovations at Rogers Centre clearly aren’t cheap. Season ticket holders have been shocked in recent days by emails about increased prices for their seats. Steve Gamester says his tickets have increased 813% from last year, from $15,000 to $137,000, and it may end up in him giving up the tickets that have been in his family since 1977.

3. Kentucky man allegedly shoots roommate during fight about last hot pocket

A Kentucky man is accused of shooting his roomate in the rear end after the two fought over a hot pocket. The roommate allegedly ate the last hot pocket and it sparked a fight between him and Clifton Williams. As the roommate went to leave, Williams allegedly went inside, got a gun and shot him.

4. Emergency evacuation underway in northern Manitoba community

Officials in northern Manitoba are scrambling to evacuate thousands of residents as a wildfire closes in on the community of Cross Lake. Pimicikamak Cree Nation Chief David Monias says many people sat in bumper-to-bumper traffic to leave the community already, but around 300-400 residents remain in the community.

5. Florida Panthers punch their ticket to Stanley Cup Final

The Florida Panthers are kings of the east. Despite entering the playoffs as the lowest-ranked seed in both conferences, the Panthers rolled through the historically-good Boston Bruins, as well as the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes to reach the Stanley Cup Final. They will likely take on the Vegas Golden Knights, who have a 3-0 series lead over the Dallas Stars in the Western final.
