Five things you need to know

1. Carney officially becomes an MP after swearing allegiance to King Charles

Mark Carney is now an MP after being officially sworn in as the representative of the Ottawa riding of Nepean. Carney posed for photographs with supporters this morning after promising his allegiance to King Charles.

2. PM explains 'Golden Dome' talks with US, says Canada could face missile attack from space

In more Carney news, the prime minister on Wednesday explained his dramatic change of heart regarding cooperation with the US after Donald Trump revealed talks about Canadian involvement in the US's plan to build a "Golden Dome" missile defence system. The PM said "I'm not sure one negotiates on this," adding that Canada could be vulnerable to missile attacks from space in the future.

3. By exporting LNG, Canada could reduce global emissions by equivalent of 89% of country's annual output: report

If Canada doubled its natural gas production and exported its excess supply to Asia, it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 89 per cent of Canada's entire emissions, according to a new study. The Fraser Institute's publication explains that Canada is "well positioned to help reduce global reliance on coal," but adds: "Regulatory challenges and a mix of federal and provincial policies, however, have slowed or blocked LNG developments in Canada."

4. Israeli minister points finger at Carney and Canada after embassy staff shot dead in Washington

A left-wing activist with a history of anti-Zionism and hostility to white Americans has been arrested after two Israeli embassy staff were shot dead in Washington, DC on Wednesday. Elias Rodriguez, 30, has been accused of shouting "free Palestine" after the couple were killed outside a Jewish museum. A minister in the Israeli government, meanwhile, has blamed Mark Carney and Canada – as well as the UK and France – for the killings, adding that their condemnations of Israel had "emboldened the forces of terror through their failure to draw moral red lines."

5. Students backed Tories in mock election because they preferred their policies, exit poll finds

Abacus Data has published an exit poll after close to a million students across the country participated in Student Vote Canada, a mock election mirroring the 2025 federal election. The youngsters, who gave the Tories a minority government, mostly voted as they did because they believed their party of choice had the best policies, according to Abacus.
