1. Asteroid makes one of the closest passes of Earth ever recorded

A small asteroid around the size of a box truck made a close pass to Earth this week. It zipped by our planet over the southern tip of South America around 4:27 pm PT on Thursday, about 3,540 kilometres above the Earth’s surface. It was well within the orbit of global satellites, but NASA says there was no risk of it striking Earth.


2. Eastern Ontario residents feel abandoned 6 months after tornado

The owners of a campground near Tweed, Ont. have spent the last six months trying to rebuild their lives after a tornado in July. The couple said their insurance company is only paying around half of the cost and they feel as though they’ve been left on their own to deal with the disaster.


3. Video shows Ontario police officer dragged by stolen truck

Footage has surfaced of a police officer being dragged by a stolen truck in Stratford, Ont. The officer was trying to pull a man out of the passenger’s side of the pickup, telling him that he was under arrest, but the driver began to pull away. Police said the officer was dragged through the parking lot before falling out and nearly getting run over. Both suspects were arrested two days later and are facing several charges.


4. Jay Leno suffers broken bones in motorcycle accident

It’s been a tough stretch for Jay Leno. Just two months after suffering severe burns to his face while working on his antique car, Leno broke multiple bones earlier this month when he was knocked off his motorcycle. The former late-night talk show host said he is doing okay following the accident.


5. Australian Open finals set

The matchups are set for the finals of the Australian Open this weekend. On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic will be looking for his 10th Aussie Open title when he takes on Stefanos Tsitsipas, who is looking for the first Grand Slam title of his career. On the women’s side, Elena Rybakina is up against Aryna Sabalenka.
