Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Ontario PCs to cut tuition fees, eliminate free tuition for low-income students

Doug Ford’s PC government announced a number of changes to post-secondary funding in Ontario on Thursday. Free tuition for students from low-income families will be eliminated and the government plans to increase tuition fees in general by 10% in 2019-20 before freezing fees the following year.

2. Tesla reducing staff by 7%

Elon Musk and Tesla’s troubles look like they’re continuing, as Musk announced on Friday that 7% of the company’s full-time employees will be laid off. The company grew by 30% in 2018, but has realized they can’t support that growth. Only the most critical temps and contractors will be retained.

3. People are using the 10-year challenge to show what’s happening to the planet

The 10-year challenge is just another internet fad, but some are using it as a chance to show what’s happening to our planet. It mostly involves things shrinking, like rivers, lakes, forests, glaciers and more, and it certainly is creating a discussion about how we’re treating our planet.

4. Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver has died

Beloved poet Mary Oliver died at the age of 83 on Thursday. The Pulitzer Prize-winning poet passed away of lymphoma at her home in Florida. Her work often explored nature, animals and the spiritual world with a belief that poetry “mustn’t be fancy.” She was one of the United States’ best-selling poets.

5. Australian Open match goes past 3 a.m.

Many tennis fans are calling for a new rule or changes after an Australian Open match went on until past 3 a.m. on Thursday. It didn’t even begin until after midnight and a rain delay made it go even longer. In the end, Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza knocked off Britain’s Johanna Konta 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 to advance to the 3rd round of the Grand Slam.
